<image:title>Common Symptoms of Psychosis - Common Types of Delusions May Include</image:title>
<image:caption>Ideas of Reference A person may believe they are receiving special messages from the TV, radio, or music. Alternatively, they may believe that colors, words, or other things in the environment have special meaning just for them. Example: Whenever Jenny sees a blue car, she believes that God is sending her a message to leave school early. Paranoia A person may believe that friends, family, government agencies, or others are trying to bother them or harm them even when it isn’t true. Example: Steve is convinced that his roommate is trying to poison his food and refuses to eat anything that he does not prepare himself. Thought Broadcasting A person may believe that other people can hear or read their thoughts. Example: Tamika has been avoiding her friends because she believes they can read her thoughts, especially when she is angry or thinking about something embarrassing. Thought Insertion A person may have thoughts that feel foreign to them and seem as if they have been inserted by an outside force or person. Example: John has been finding himself thinking of highly offensive comments about women that he would never say out loud. He is convinced that his cell phone is somehow implanting these thoughts in his mind. Grandiose/Religious Beliefs A person may develop a belief that they have a supernatural power, is famous, or they are the messiah or a chosen person with a special mission. Example: Julietta believes that she owns the internet and has been chosen by God to save the world by deciphering codes on web pages.</image:caption>

<image:title>Common Symptoms of Psychosis - Common Symptoms of Psychosis</image:title>
<image:caption>The following symptoms are called positive symptoms. In this case, the word positive does not mean they are good, but rather that something is present that should not be. Hallucinations These are false perceptions of one or more of the five senses: hearing, seeing, touch, taste, or smell. They most often involve hearing noises or voices, such as having one’s name called when no one is around or seeing something that is not really there. A person experiences it as real, even though it is not actually happening. False beliefs or delusions A false belief that does not fit with the person’s cultural group is known as a delusion. Even though delusions may seem odd or obviously irrational to others, they are held as true by the people who have them. You cannot just talk someone out of a delusion. (See common types of delusions below.) Confused thinking A person who is experiencing psychosis may have trouble thinking clearly or logically and putting their thoughts into words. They may speak in sentences that are jumbled or lose their train of thought when speaking. Sometimes a person experiencing psychosis makes meaningful connections between ideas and events that most other people would not make. Also, there may be trouble concentrating, following a conversation, thinking abstractly, or remembering new information.</image:caption>

      <image:title>What is Psychosis? - What is Psychosis?</image:title>
<image:caption>Psychosis is a set of symptoms that involve a person’s mind “playing tricks on them.” The person experiencing psychosis may have difficulty telling the difference between their own thoughts and perceptions and those that come from the outside world. Although real to the person experiencing psychosis, psychotic experiences are not experienced as real to others. In fact, as a medical term, psychosis refers to a loss of contact with reality, or difficulty telling what is real from what is not real. Psychosis is more common than many people think. Symptoms may come and go or be relatively constant. It is often associated with mental health disorders like depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. However, psychosis can also occur for many other reasons, including substance abuse, brain injury, seizure disorders, or conditions of extreme sleep deprivation or isolation. Most importantly, psychosis is treatable. It may be preventable</image:caption>

<image:title>What is Psychosis? - How Does Psychosis Begin?</image:title>
<image:caption>Psychosis almost never comes on suddenly. Rather, most people experience gradual changes over a period of months to years before experiencing pronounced or diagnosable symptoms. These changes can include new or worsening trouble with concentration, a change in the way things look or sound, or a general sense that something “isn’t quite right.” These changes are often accompanied by new or worsening difficulties in school or social functioning or declining interest in people, activities, or self-care. The earlier that a person gets help when they are experiencing these earliest warning signs for psychosis, the better the person’s outcome is likely to be. In fact, early treatment may be able to prevent the development of pronounced or disabling psychotic symptoms.</image:caption>

<image:title>What is Psychosis? - How is Psychosis Treated?</image:title>
<image:caption>MYTH: Psychosis is untreatable. FACT: There are a number of effective treatments for psychotic symptoms and the illnesses in which these symptoms occur. The majority of individuals who experience psychosis respond to treatment. An important part of treatment is establishing a good relationship with a treatment provider or treatment team. Currently, there is strong research support for the following psychological treatments for treating psychosis in people with diagnosed illnesses such as schizophrenia or bipolar disorder: Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) Cognitive Remediation Family Psychoeducation Social Skills Training Supported Employment Social Learning/ Token Economy Programs For more information visit this website on research-supported psychological treatments organized by treatment and disorder: Society of Clinical Psychology – Research Supported Psychological Treatments</image:caption>

      <image:title>Early Signs of Psychosis</image:title>
<image:caption>Although most people think of psychosis as appearing “out of the blue,” this is uncommon. Most often, there are warning signs months or years beforehand. Early recognition provides the best opportunity for early intervention and prevention of psychosis. At times, people describe the earliest change as having increased difficulty screening out distracting information and sensations. They may have difficulty focusing or understanding what they are hearing. Gradually, they may become confused about what is real and what is not real, or they may become mistrustful, even panicky. Some of these early changes are not specific to psychosis. In other words, many young people with these signs and symptoms may have mental health problems other than psychosis or be experiencing a temporary reaction to stress. For those in the very early stages of a psychotic illness, however, these provide important warning signs. When several signs or symptoms occur or become more intense over time, or they arise in the context of a family history of psychotic disorders, it is particularly important to seek help early.</image:caption>

<image:title>Early Signs of Psychosis - Other Attenuated (Mild Symptoms)</image:title>
<image:caption>Other early warning signs are more like the positive symptoms of psychosis but are milder or more subtle. We call these attenuated (mild) psychotic symptoms. When these symptoms have begun or become worse in the last year, research suggests that the person may be at higher risk for developing psychosis: Suspiciousness (e.g., Feeling increasingly uneasy around friends, family, or teachers without knowing why) Odd beliefs or magical thinking (e.g., Feeling confused about whether a dream actually happened; Wondering whether other people might be able to read your mind; Finding meaningful connections between unrelated events; Clear and frequent déjà vu experiences or experiences of unreality) Unusual perceptual experiences (e.g., Sounds seeming louder than usual; Seeing shadows that look like people or vague figures out of the corner of the eye; Finding that everyday noises sound like words or have special meaning) Tangential/circumstantial speech (e.g., Going off track while speaking; Using odd combinations of words)</image:caption>

<image:title>Barriers to Getting Help - Stigma and Negative Attitudes</image:title>
<image:caption>Stigma and negative attitudes toward mental health symptoms, problems, and help-seeking are significant barriers to early intervention. Young people tend to be very concerned about being seen as “mental” or “emo” by their friends and others. The stigma of mental illness is associated with less willingness to seek help. Given the relative absence of public health campaigns or school-based education programs to support mental health literacy, much of what young people and parents know about mental illness comes from the media. Unfortunately, many media portrayals are quite negative and work as a disincentive to identify problems or seek help. Believing that seeking help “won’t help” or thinking that “nothing can help” also keeps people from getting help early. Young people and their parents are often unsure whether specific sources of help will actually make a useful difference.</image:caption>
